Maseno School for the Deaf and Blind

Location: Maseno/Kisumu, Kenya

Type of project: Schule für taube und taube&blinde Kinder

Aim: Enable deaf children to receive a formation and to do educational advertising in the villages that disabled children are not the punishment of a higher force but that they have their equal place in the same society.

Brief description:
Maseno School for Deaf and Blind is a residential school and is located on the road from Kisumu to Busia about 24km of Kisumu. The school was founded by the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) in 1975.

The school hosts 143 children from kindergarten age to puberty. The school enables those children, despite their handicap, to receive a school formation and to do an apprenticeship as a carpenter (boys) or tailor (girls). In 1995 the section for deaf-blind children was added. Today, eleven children (four boys and seven girls) of which some have some mental disablement, too, are cared for.

The residential school gets support from the State (staff), the Christoffel Blindenmission (CBM) and the United Nations World Food Program (GAA) in the form of funds for electricity, food, fuel, medical supplies. Most parents of these children live in really poor circumstances. It is impossible for them to pay for their children, especially not for the disabled.

The blind-deaf children
The children are cared for by five teachers. The latter teach the children to master their daily duties like hygiene, eat, brush their teeth and so on. An Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) is set up for every child, in which is retained to which degree the child is disabled, what it can absorb, how it communicates, what it likes to do and can do, the family situation and so on.

The problems
Here too, funds are necessary for:

- toys for the disabled
- reconstruction of the walkways (repair holes, build ramps and handrails for
  the children's security)
- a specially designed class room for the blind-deaf children with an integrated toilet
